When a sperm contacts an oocyte, the acrosome in its head bursts, releasing digestive enzymes.  This helps penetrate the zona pellucida, the jellylike coat of the oocyte and reach receptors on the vitelline envelope. When the membranes of sperm and oocyte touch, they fuse and the sperm nucleus enters.
